Electrification means moving a home’s systems, space heating, water heating, cooking, and laundry, from fossil fuels like natural gas over to efficient electric equipment. It doesn’t have to happen all at once. Many Lake Oswego homeowners do it in stages, especially in homes that have already been through one or more remodels: a heat pump when the furnace needs replacing, a heat pump water heater when the old tank is due, an induction range whenever the kitchen gets updated next.
Why it matters for a city like Lake Oswego. With most of the city’s homes dating to the 1970s and 1980s, and roughly 15% built since 2000, there’s a wide range of existing systems out there, some already updated, others original to the house. Replacing a dying gas furnace with a heat pump uses up to three times less energy than resistance-based electric heating, and a heat pump water heater uses roughly 70% less energy than a standard electric tank. Planning ahead means choosing the right equipment on your own timeline, especially useful if you’re already planning a larger remodel or addition.
Space heating and cooling through heat pump replacements for furnaces or baseboard heaters, water heating through heat pump water heaters, and building envelope work (insulation, air sealing, and ventilation) planned alongside the equipment changes, particularly useful in homes with additions where systems may have been added piecemeal over the years.
Electrification incentives are expanding at the state and utility level, and Energy Trust of Oregon incentives apply to many of the individual upgrades involved (heat pumps, water heaters, insulation). If you own a rental property in Lake Oswego, state-supported programs through the Oregon Department of Energy sometimes offer reduced-cost heat pump installation, subject to funding availability. We’re a licensed Oregon contractor (CCB #245539) that treats electrification as a sequencing problem, not a single sale. A roadmap built around your actual home, including whatever additions or updates it’s already had, holds up better than a single recommendation that ignores the rest of the house.
